I shot much of this video when I visited the farm in the middle of the five anniversary recycle-pick. The intention of the film is to give an impression of what it is like to walk around Islington's city farm.

How to Istube [Nov. 26th, 2007|05:15 pm]

An Ecotuber is an environmental film maker who documents their local ecological concerns through web-based video broadcasting.

For example Islington Ecotubers are uploading their green films on istube, a local YouTube group.

If you see something in your street or neighbourhood that you would like to talk about, filming it may be the best way of explaining it. A sequence of  camera stills can also work.

We are hoping to develop a network of environmental film makers locally, nationally and globally so wherever you are, you are welcome to join and contribute. Here is what you can do:

Step one: Planning your film

Have a think about the message you want to make and write down a few notes to plan how best you can explain your ideas to others. For instance what you will call your film project, what your message actually is and what shots you can take. You might want to record a spoken explanation of what your film is about or you may prefer to create subtitles.

Step two: Making your film

You will need a digital camera or camcorder – a mobile phone camera will do. Try to pick a time with good available light (unless your message is about the darkness) and start taking the photos or film that show the issue you want to talk about. For example: Ecotubers have been taking photos and film of the steps  or other obstacles that wheelchair users cannot negotiate when travelling along the pavement. Another example is a tree that is being threatened by a new development.

Step three: Reviewing & editing your film

This is the stage where you look at the photos/film you have taken and decide if it clearly shows the message you want to make as it is or whether it needs rearranging. If you have taken a series of photos you can put them together in a sequence and include additional sound, like a voice-over or perhaps music. You will need to be careful not to break copyright rules if adding music.

Step four: Uploading your film

Create your own YouTube account by going to: http://youtube.com/signup and completing the form. Once you have joined you can upload your video:

http://youtube.com/my_videos_upload

I

Step five: Embedding your film in livejournal

Create an account on LiveJournal by going to: https://www.livejournal.com/create.bml and filling out the online form. Once you have an LiveJournal account join the istube community by following this link:

http://www.livejournal.com/community/join.bml?comm=istube

Other points

If you have a webcam you can even make a direct video straight to air on Youtube.

If you have any questions please email istube@googlemail.com

How to get started [Oct. 15th, 2007|05:17 pm]

The purpose of IsTube is to provide a community portal for environmental videos about Islington using the video sharing website YouTube and the blogging website LiveJournal.

Anyone can get involved: all you need is a digital camera, preferably one with a video facility, an email address and an internet connection. Then follow these steps & if you are stuck for ideas look at the suggestions for film making topics.

1. Get a YouTube account:
Go to http://www.youtube.com/signup & follow the instructions on the right-hand side of the page. You will need to choose a username & provide some basic personal details like your email address. You will need to verify that you are who you say you are by clicking on a link sent to your email address.

2. Get a LiveJournal account:

Go to http://www.livejournal.com/ & click on the green “create a journal” button. Again – fill in the online form – it is a similar procedure to joining youtube although you can provide a lot more infomation if you want.

3. Find the LiveJournal community called IsTube & join it.

You will use YouTube to upload the films you make & LiveJournal as the place

Solar Panel Credit Union [Nov. 27th, 2006|06:55 pm]

I would like to find out whether it would be viable to set up a colelctive account - or perhaps a small credit union in which people could save money collectively with the aim of evenually upgrading our homes with solar water heating & photovoltaic panels. Or may be even something like a combined heat & power district heating project.

With fuel prices set to increase rapidly in te next few years, as fossil fuel resources become scarcer & the potential threats of climate change becoming more apparent the amount of time before the investment in micro-renewables (the 'pay back' time) is falling & the liekly benefit of long-term saving by investing in such a project is increasing.

Any such fund would need to be properly set up & carefully managed. If you have any thoughts or questions - or if you are interested in the possibility of such a project post a message here.
